Acne-Prone Skin

Acne-prone skin, like oily skin, needs moisturizing oils high in linoleic acid to balance without overstimulating sebum production, soothe irritation, and decrease redness. Acne prone skin needs dry oils that absorb quickly and do not leave your skin feeling oily.

We use: hemp, pomegranate, sunflower, watermelon, pumpkin, sea buckthorn, argan, tamanu, rosehip, and red raspberry in our recommended blends for acne-prone skin. Carrier Oils for Custom Blends lists each oil and their properties.

Do I Have Acne-Prone Skin?

Your skin is acne-prone if you experience whiteheads, blackheads, papules, pustules, nodules, or cystic lesions.

There are many different types of acne, and they all begin with a clogged pore. Since we get acne at all ages in life, the goal is to help normalize your skin to lessen the occurence of breakouts. Finding the right all-natural product could be beneficial for your acne-prone skin and a great addition to your current skincare routine. Acne-prone skin is not a medical diagnosis and we do not claim to cure or treat acne and encourage you to discuss treatment options with your physician if you have severe acne.

Acne-Prone Characteristics

Four Main Causes of Acne

  • Excess sebum production
  • Hair follicles clogged by sebum and dead skin cells
  • Bacteria
  • Inflammation

Old, dead skin cells normally shed every month but If skin is acne-prone, the dead cells clog pores, causing acne. Exfoliating once a month during this point in your cells cycle could help improve your complexion.

Acne-Prone Skin Ranges from Mild to Severe

  • Mild – few and minor breakouts, blackheads, bumpiness, rarely have inflamed pimples, and no widespread breakouts.
  • Moderate – noticeable breakouts, bumpy skin, blackheads, and inflamed papules and pustules.
  • Severe – the biggest difference is inflammation and large, red, swollen blemishes (nodules and cystic lesions).

Types of Acne

  • Comedonal acne – non-inflamed bumps, occurs everywhere on body but most commonly on face, ranges from mild to severe.
    • Whiteheads – closed plugged pores or closed comedones.
    • Blackheads – open plugged pores or open comedones (oil turns dark when exposed to air).
    • Milia – small, non-inflamed cysts, tiny bumps with obvious whiteheads caused by keratin getting trapped below the skins surface; it will not pop, not a zit.
  • Papules- small, red, tender bumps.
  • Pustules- most commonly called pimples, papules with pus at their tips.
  • Nodules – large, solid, hard, and painful blemishes deep beneath surface of skin.
    • Most likely right before period but need prescription medications if have them regularly.
  • Cystic lesions – large, inflamed, painful blemishes similar to nodules but they are softer and pus-filled (both nodules and cystic lesions can leave scars).
    • Occur anywhere on body but deeper in skin. Takes weeks to heal, causes a lot of damage to skin. Topical remedies are not useful.
